Amnesty International and the Degradation of Democracy in India

As of September 29th, 2020, Amnesty International India has been made to halt all operations and let go of its staff due to the accounts of the organisation being frozen by the government of India. The apparent grounds on which this has been done is the violation of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, or the FCRA, which states that the government can regulate the acceptance and utilisation of foreign contribution or foreign hospitality by certain individuals or associations or companies and prohibit the acceptance and utilisation of foreign contributions for any activities “detrimental to the national interest.”
